The Way We Were….1986

June 16th, 2020

The latest in our 35th anniversary look back at the club over the years!

With Alex Stewart having moved on, the baton was picked up by Andy McFarlane and Derek Ross as they took over the running of the Club alongside their playing duties. Andy (#66) had previously been with the Glasgow Lions, and as well as his organisational skills, brought along his friend Kenny Hodge to help on the field. Derek (#80) was a local lad who would go on to become Club Chairman.

One of their first tasks was to raise funds, and to this end a share issue was launched. For £5 you could become a shareholder of the East Kilbride Pirates, and while no dividend was ever paid, you got a certificate to mark your contribution to the foundation of EKP.

On the field, things started promisingly with a 13-0 home win over Clydesdale Colts. It was to prove a false dawn however as 6 successive losses brought a 1-6 season in the BAFL (Anglo Conference).

Thanks to James Forsyth who donated his original share certificate to the club in 2012.
