Matthew Davies named as new adult contact Head Coach

November 6th, 2023

Following the conclusion of the search for a new Head Coach for the East Kilbride Pirates Adult Contact team, Matthew Davies has been appointed to the role with immediate effect.

Matthew is a well-known and respected face across the British American Football community. As well as being a veteran offensive lineman for the Pirates, he cut his coaching teeth as OL coach and then Offensive Coordinator with Edinburgh Napier University and as a GA with the GB Lions Men’s team. This was followed by a stint as OL coach back with the Pirates adult team before progressing to lead the Pirates U19 team to three National Championship Finals, and one National Plate Final before stepping away in 2019. He established the Scotland U19 team in 2020 and led it through their first competitive cycle and most recently has been Special Teams Coordinator and assistant Head Coach of the GB Lions Men’s team – currently fresh off wins against France and Denmark this year.

Matthew commented: ”It’s a huge honour to take on the role of Adult Contact HC for a club that has been a huge part of my life since I joined as a rookie in 2006. The Pirates continue to produce great players, have one of the strongest and most highly regarded organisations in the UK and have an incredibly passionate fan base who create the best home game experience in the country. There are challenges ahead and I’m excited to get to work!”

Club Chair Amanda McDonald commented: “I’m absolutely delighted Matthew has agreed to take on the role of Head Coach. His passion and commitment to the club is unparalled. The team is in great hands as we prepare for our 2024 premiership campaign. I’d like to once again thank outgoing Head Coach Andrew McGowan, and also like to extend a big thank you to Gordon Wallace for stepping up over the last couple of weeks to keep things rolling and start planning for the season ahead, and I’m very pleased to confirm he will be taking on the role of Offensive Coordinator and will continue as assistant Head Coach. Matthew is in the process of pulling together and confirming the rest of his coaching staff, which we will share in due course.”
